There are three main types of exercises available: belly breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness. The tracks mentioned in your Stress Control class are available free-of-charge and voiced by Dr. Jim White, the creator of Stress Control.
Relaxation is a very personal thing – what suits one person doesn’t suit another. So, experiment with the tracks to find what works best for you.
Please start with the introduction track; it explains why we use these tracks and how you can get the best out of them.
Belly breathing is a technique to slow down your autonomic nervous system (ANS) by breathing from the diaphragm using a skill called 3:4 breathing.
Deep muscle relaxation helps slow down your autonomic nervous system and ease muscle tension—two areas most affected by stress.
Once you're comfortable with the deep relaxation track, you can move on to this quicker version. It’s similar but helps you achieve relaxation in half the time.
Mindful breathing adds mindfulness to belly breathing. This exercise is designed to work on your mindfulness skills, which can reduce stress and boost wellbeing.
This track will help you to achieve one of the most important aims of mindfulness- living in the moment.
These tracks are voiced by Dr Ruth Jamieson, clinical psychologist.
